What's changed in MuirWave, newest first. Each release is documented here as it ships, so this page always reflects the version in your hands.
Citation corrections, provenance on every export, and layout polish
A maintenance release: every threshold citation in the Impact Assessment was independently re-checked against the held regulator documents and several were corrected, every export artifact now carries its own source trail, and a handful of layout defects are fixed. No pricing or product changes.
- Threshold table locators corrected — the Impact Assessment PDF's weighting-curve caption now cites the parameters' real home, NMFS-OPR-71 Table 5 (it previously cited Table ES1, a different table — hearing groups, not weighting parameters). Southall et al. 2019 citations now name their table too — "Table 7" for impulsive criteria, "Table 6" for non-impulsive — matching how the NMFS citation is already written.
- JNCC soft-start corrected to 20 minutes — MuirWave previously stated the JNCC protocol's soft-start default as 30 minutes; that number is actually the protocol's separate pre-piling search duration. The soft-start default is 20 minutes, and the mitigation-zone ring is now labelled "JNCC min. 500 m" everywhere it's drawn, because the protocol states 500 m as a minimum, not a fixed value.
- BSH 750 m re-attributed — the 750 m compliance distance is now attributed to the BSH approval condition and the BMU Schallschutzkonzept, not StUK4 (a monitoring standard, not the source of the limit).
- Fish reports no longer cite a mammal-only source — the reference list on a Fish + Turtles Impact Assessment no longer names a marine-mammal behavioural-response citation the run never used.
- EPBC framing corrected — MuirWave no longer attributes the NMFS/Southall default thresholds to Australian DCCEEW guidance, which names neither framework.
- Every export now carries its own provenance — Data (CSV) closes with a PROVENANCE block naming every criteria claim used, with its citation, locator and source edition; GIS (GeoJSON) carries the same information as a top-level object plus a source property on every regulatory reference ring; Figure (PNG) draws a visible credit line under its legend; the Impact Assessment PDF prints a "Threshold table source(s)" line under its criteria table. Every artifact is now traceable back to its source tables on its own, without the report or the app open.
- Mitigation dose credit, made visible — on the Mitigation panel's trade-off table, when a group's mitigated range is governed by peak pressure (which soft-start and ADD don't reduce), a second "dose (SEL₂₄ₕ)" line now shows where that credit actually landed, with a footnote explaining why the headline range didn't move.
- Map legend clearance on iPad mini — the mitigation-zone legend no longer overlaps the map's chip cluster when the Impact panel narrows the map.
- Layout polish — the Impact panel's CONVENTION label no longer wraps mid-word; the BSH compliance badge no longer wraps "dB" onto its own line at larger interface scales; the Impact Assessment PDF's weighting-curve figure no longer clips its curve tails through the legend.
- Mac widescreen canvas — the Acoustics workspace map now fills the available width on a wide Mac window (or a compatible iPad extended display) instead of stopping short with empty bands on either side; ordinary iPad screens are unchanged.
Threshold corrections, one export sheet, and sync fixes
A maintenance release: corrected impact-assessment thresholds, a redesigned export system, and fixes to project sync and exported figures. No pricing or product changes.
- Fish & sea-turtle criteria corrected — where Popper et al. 2014 publishes only a qualitative relative-risk rating rather than a number, MuirWave now shows that rating instead of a computed range. Sea-turtle recoverable injury and TTS are the clearest example.
- Continuous-noise fish criteria, now computed — the two rms criteria for hearing-specialist fish (170 dB re 1 µPa rms / 48 h recoverable injury, 158 dB rms / 12 h TTS) draw a real ring and export a real polygon, with the exposure duration stated beside every number.
- TTS thresholds now print beside AUD INJ in the Impact Assessment's criteria table, for both NMFS 2024 and Southall 2019 — no more flipping to a page that didn't have the number.
- One Export sheet — reports and data/figure exports now live in one place, reached from either export tile. Propagation Report replaces the old "Formal EIA Report" name, and Impact Assessment now includes what used to be a separate Methodology PDF format.
- Two new export formats — GIS (GeoJSON), with proper per-hearing-group isopleth polygons and regulatory reference rings, and Figure (PNG), a print-ready site map at 1500×840 px minimum.
- Figure exports fixed on Mac — the Mac Figure (PNG) export now renders at full resolution, matching iPad.
- Project sync — renaming or re-saving a project now reaches your other devices within seconds instead of waiting for next launch; the Projects footer shows live sync status instead of a static claim.
- Scratchpad saves — a note that fails to save now tells you, instead of silently disappearing.
- Restore Purchases — a connection hiccup during restore is now reported honestly, instead of being read as "nothing to restore". Offline, it now reports immediately that it can't reach the App Store instead of appearing to hang, and gives up honestly after 30 seconds if the App Store doesn't answer; Manage Subscription explains itself rather than opening a blank system sheet while you're offline.
- Live pricing — if MuirWave Live's prices can't be fetched, the paywall now says so plainly with a Try Again button, instead of spinning forever.
The first release
MuirWave 1.0 — a complete underwater acoustic propagation tool for iPad, built for civilian marine-acoustics work: survey, environmental-impact assessment, and research.
- Full propagation engine — ray paths, transmission loss and a continuous sound field, computed from textbook ocean-acoustics physics.
- Convergence zones, bottom bounce & depth excess — the features acousticians actually read, detected and labelled automatically.
- Water-column view — the sound-speed profile and temperature/salinity structure at any pin.
- Continuous frequency — a log-scale slider from 10 Hz to 50 kHz.
- Units that are yours — depth, range, coordinates, speed, temperature and sound speed are all set from one card in Settings, with every option visible rather than cycled through. Your choice follows you across relaunches, across Reset, and across opening a colleague's project. See Reference §01.
- Measured layer depth — type the sonic layer depth from your bathythermograph and every prediction rebuilds through it; the ◆ solid-brass chip shows your observation is driving.
- Measured ambient noise — up to 12 spectrum-level points warp the modelled noise floor through what your display actually reads.
- Detection-threshold presets — honest DT by processing type (automated, spectrogram, broadband energy, cross-correlation), with a warning when preset and bandwidth disagree.
- Weak-layer flag — when the model's layer depth is a broad plateau rather than a sharp feature, the readout says so instead of faking precision.
- Impact ranges against recognised thresholds (NMFS 2024 / Southall 2019 for mammals, Popper et al. for fish), by hearing group and source type.
- Mitigation screening PRO — a dedicated panel for noise-abatement systems (bubble curtains, hydro-sound dampers, screens): the mitigated-vs-unmitigated impact ranges per hearing group, a frequency-dependent insertion-loss curve that shows where the abatement actually works, and operational measures (soft-start ramp, acoustic deterrent) — with the seal caveat handled honestly. Screening-grade, carried through to the methodology export.
- Regulator-ready methodology export PRO — a multi-page PDF documenting inputs, data sources, thresholds and results.
- Global coverage, offline — GEBCO bathymetry, WOA23 climatology and sediment data ship in the app; every prediction works with no connection.
- Live ocean & weather LIVE — real-time sound-speed, currents, wind and waves, with honest fallback to climatology when offline.
- High-resolution regional packs LIVE — sharper data for the areas you work.
- Full provenance — every result is traceable to a named, public-domain source.
- Docked and floating panels — on iPad and Mac, panels dock beside a wide chart or below a portrait-shaped chart without blocking the map. A centred header grabber shows where to drag a panel free; one-tap switching and rail-tile re-docking keep several panels quick to manage. See the panel guide.
- Interface Scale — three sizes (DENSE · STANDARD · LARGE) for the app's text, chips and panels, in Settings → Display. Bigger steps trade map area for readability — built for the Mac and larger iPads, applies instantly. iPad mini offers DENSE and STANDARD.
- Light appearance — a daylight-legible chart-paper palette alongside the original dark theme, in Settings → Display (DARK · LIGHT · SYSTEM). Built for bright bridge wings and daylight deck work; SYSTEM follows the device.
- Keyboard shortcuts everywhere — one command set on iPad and Mac: menus with ⌘ shortcuts in the iPad menu bar (swipe down from the top edge) and the Mac menu bar alike. See Keyboard shortcuts for the full table.
- Map cursor readout — a live coordinate readout follows the pointer (trackpad, mouse or Apple Pencil hover) across the chart, alongside the probe's own readout.
